The very rich goumers manage to make it big in this dark comedy starring Ralph Fiennes and Anya Taylor-Joy.
The film takes place as several dishes, each one well-crafted - and a little sinister. It is a very rare haute cuisine with proteins and fungi. Julia Slowik (Ralph Fiennes), the famous chef from Hawthorne, runs the restaurant in her own peculiar way, expressing herself in a few words and being emphatic: “Don't eat”, “I like it”.
Taste some dishes alongside Margo and Tyler, a movie star -John Leguizamo- and his assistant -Aimee Carrero- a distinguished food critic and her editor - Janet McTeer, Paul Adelstein- and a couple who are Hawthorn regulars - Reed Birney , Judith Light is sensational. But, there is an expectation that is accelerating and somewhat disturbing, as the night unfolds to find out if, in the end, they will be worthy of this shining.
I need to highlight here Elsa (Hong Chau), your guide and restaurant manger, she doesn't seem to think so. She guides them magnificently through all things Hawthorne, inviting guests to watch the chefs in the open kitchen as they innovate, creatively announcing dishes and stealing attention. Her pretense is ruthless. It speaks to the ears of a technical brother who complains: “You will get less than you want and more than you deserve”.
“The Menu”, is a film with many ingredients that “make your mouth water”. Of all the clients, Margot is the least fit. As we can see in how she winces when Tyler describes the “mouthfeel” of a meal, she doesn't love on the same altar as haute cuisine. But even as “The Menu” wobbles unevenly in its third act and things get a lot less appetizing, its greasy last bites manage to capture a common aspect of gastronomy: “The Menu” will leave you hungry.
